Bradco “Gives Back” to the Community

Amidst the current backdrop of economic struggles, corporate cutbacks, and diminished charitable contributions, a local Wauconda company is breaking the mold by sponsoring its third annual “Give Back to the Community” program. Bradco, located at 405 S. Barrington Road in Wauconda, is a distributor of residential and commercial building materials. They are collaborating with Waukegan Roofing Company to supply and install a new roof to long-time Wauconda senior residents Chuck and Rosemary Manahan. The action will take place on Saturday, October 17 at 7:00 am at 1012 Grant Place, Wauconda, Illinois with a crew of approximately 30 volunteers tearing off the old roof and installing a new one plus gutters. They plan to done by 10:00 am!

The process began several weeks ago with Bradco Branch Manager, Kevin Koch and his Sales Representative, Scott Covelli determining that despite the drop in new construction, Bradco’s continued success warranted a repeat of the “Give Back” program they initiated two years ago. Bradco would supply the required roofing materials, and coordinate the installation with one of their roofing customers. Scott immediately contacted Phil Diederich, the Residential Production Manager for Waukegan Roofing, who supplied the labor for last year’s project in Waukegan. Phil and his staff were excited to return and donate their time and installation expertise to a deserving senior family.

Scott then contacted Dan Quick, Wauconda’s Village Administrator, to obtain a list of potential recipients in need of a new roof and with a limited income. Scott and Phil evaluated the condition of the submitted roofs along with the financial abilities of the residents. When the Manahan’s were notified that they had been selected to receive a new roof, they were shocked and extremely grateful to all those involved in the process. Phil measured the roof and Dave Lewis, Bradco’s Certainteed shingle representative, agreed to donate the 30-year warranty shingles required to complete the project.

Scott and Phil continued to utilize their connections to obtain free gutters from Sock Woodruff at RainTrade located in Lake Bluff, and a free dumpster and recycling of the old shingles from Excel Disposal Services and Green 46 Recycling. Scott was not surprised that his business partners were eager to donate. “Everyone wanted to pitch-in to the cause,” he said. Phil stated, “Our employees are given the choice of donating their time to the project or being paid. So far everyone wants to volunteer their time.”
The Village of Wauconda is very proud to have Bradco as part of their business community. The Economic Development Department reported that Bradco was a welcomed addition when they relocated to Wauconda earlier this year. They immediately joined the Wauconda Chamber of Commerce and are already showing their commitment to giving back to the community. In addition, their ability to generate sales tax revenues is definitely a financial asset to the Village. Bradco hopes to supply a new roof to all communities in Lake County in the years to come.

Waukegan Roofing Co., Inc. is one of only two roofing contractors in Northern Illinois to have Certified Residential Roof Inspectors on their staff. All three successfully passed the certification course held in Minneapolis, Minnesota this February. As a Haag Certified Roofing Inspector (HCRI), these gentlemen will help inspectors provide quick and accurate damage evaluation and correct estimates according to scientifically based damage assessment techniques. Local business steps up to help resident in need -- By TARA MAY | Staff Writer

Longtime Mundelein resident Shirley Werba was already worried about how she was going to pay to fix her leaky roof.

And then her basement flooded.

"There was no way I could afford to fix both," said Werba, who has lived in Mundelein since 1954. "I just kept thinking, maybe next year I can do it." Then Werba received a phone call.

A Mundelein company, Bradco Supply, was looking to give back to the community and offered to supply Werba with the materials to fix her roof for free.

"It was just like the Lord answered my prayers," said Werba, whose husband died 23 years ago. "It was out of the blue. I was just numb. I couldn¹t believe the company would do something like this." Scott Covelli, an outside salesperson for Bradco, said they enjoyed record-breaking sales last year, and wanted to say thanks to the community. He got in touch with the Mundelein Police Department, who gave him Werba¹s name as an outstanding community member who needed help.

Covelli said he was standing with a colleague, Bruce Diederich, the owner of Waukegan Roofing, when Police Chief Raymond Rose called him with Werba¹s name.

Immediately, Diederich offered his company¹s assistance with free labor.

"The timing of that was amazing," Covelli said. "And it was so cool how everyone wanted to pull together and help out." Werba said she was so excited at the prospect, she was too scared to tell anyone about it, thinking the offer might fall through. "You never know," she said. "Sometimes things fall through." But on Saturday, it actually happened. More than 30 people from Waukegan Roofing and several more from Bradco worked together and fixed Werba¹s roof in less than four hours. They also made plans to repair her kitchen window with a new window donated by Simonton Windows. "Wouldn¹t it be a wonderful world if all the companies did something like this?" Werba said. "It was just so kind and generous. I don¹t know how many hands I was shaking all day long. I¹m just so thankful." Covelli said it was an amazing experience, especially to be able to do something for someone so grateful.

"She was crying," he said. "And we were all touched. I¹m just happy to be in a place where I can help."
