Waukegan Gives Back

Each year, Waukegan Roofing participates in the Waukegan Roofing Gives Back program where we identify one deserving individual or family who is in need of a new roof – and then we surprise them with a FREE ROOF! It’s our way of saying “Thank you” for all that they do to better the world and the lives of those around them.

This year’s recipient of the WRC Gives Back Project is the Scalzo Family of Lombard.

While attending an annual benefit for a local Walk MS team in 2013, we met Nicole and Jim Scalzo.

Think about this for a minute: how much of a challenge is it to walk? To do the grocery shopping? To face each day with a positive attitude and the energy to conquer all the day may bring? For most, these are just the routines of everyday life – something we likely take for granted being able to do easily. But for those battling Multiple Sclerosis (MS), these seemingly simple activities can represent an insurmountable challenge.

Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body, basically stopping people from moving. Symptoms of the disease can range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis.

Nicole lives with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a debilitating disease that affects the central nervous system. Sitting across the desk from the doctor in 2008, life changed immediately for the Scalzo family with her diagnosis. Because of this, they launched the Nicoli and the Cannoli Crew Walk MS team to raise money and awareness for MS – and it’s quickly become the family mission to do all they can to assist in the push to fund critical research to find a cure.

In fact, Nicole and Jim have been so committed to raising money for the cure of MS, that their team has been recognized as being one of the highest-grossing teams in the state of Illinois for the Walk MS organization. In May of 2015 alone, they raised over $9000!

Nicole’s goal is to “work to take out MS before it takes me out!”

“A diagnosis of MS is NOT the end of the world. Sure, there are good days and bad days, but medicine has made great strides in finding a treatment for the symptoms of MS. With continued support and funding, I’m confident that we can one day we can experience a world free of MS,” she goes on to say.

On September 24th, the entire workforce from Waukegan Roofing worked to provide a badly needed new roof for the Scalzo family. The entire project was completed within 1 day. The materials for the project were supplied by ABC Supply and Owens Corning, and local reps were onsite during the project.

Waukegan Roofing is honored to present this year’s Waukegan Roofing Gives Back project to Nicole and Jim Scalzo for the critical work they do raising awareness for MS and money for the vital research needed to bring us closer to their dream: a world free of MS.

We feel incredibly lucky to be able to Give Back to this family that has worked so hard to be part of the solution for the 20,000 people in Illinois who live with MS each day.
